Reptile hibernacula project

Lesnes Abbey Conservation Volunteers have received a £345 community fund award from the Co-operative group. The award  it to create a reptile hibernacula (safe haven for hibernating reptiles) in a London heath land habitat  & provide insurance in order for LACVto run this project & future events.

This project will also envolve heath land habitat preservation with invading plant species being removed. The award winning heath land in Abbey Wood which has been restored by LACV (working with Bexley Council) over the last 12 years is of great importance as it one of the few heath land habitats left in London. By surveying the area over the last year with advice from the herpetological conservation trust (amphibian & reptile experts), LACV has established there is a healthy population of slow worms, & common lizards present (both protected species).  By creating the reptile hibernacula (with advice from the herpetological conservation trust & help from BTCV) LACV hopes to increase the resident reptile population, benefit other local native wildlife (insects, wasps & solitary bees), promote nature conservation in the local community, provide work experience & training for people from the local community & help LACV build stronger links with other organizations
